Will Running A Marathon At Low Altitude Slow Me Down?

Today’s Ask A Coach question comes from Lior who is training for the Rock ‘N Roll Marathon in Phoenix.

Question: Will I lose time because of the low altitude (1350 feet) compared to all of my sea level marathons? Is it going to affect my performance (targeting sub 2:45) even by as little as one minute or so?

Run SMART Coach: Coach Daniels says the effects of altitude on endurance performance starts at an altitude of about 1,000 meters (roughly 3,000 feet). An altitude of 1,000 feet will have no impact on your performance. Stick to your normal game plan and good luck going after sub-2:45!

Everett Hill’s PR Parade Continues

Everett Hill has been working with Run SMART coach Vince Sherry for almost three years now. He has turned 50 since and is still setting new personal bests over a variety of distances. Just three weeks after setting a new half marathon PR in Nashville, Everett ran his fastest 5k ever in 23:54 at the Alpharetta 5k, dropping 37 seconds off of his previous best.

After Vince forwarded Everett’s results I did a quick search since it seems like Everett runs a PR every time he signs up for a race.

Rounding out the Run SMART results at the 2010 P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n Roll Marathon and Half Marathon is Becky Angeles of Murphy, TX. Run SMART Really Rocks P.F. Chang’s

Run SMART Rocks P.F. Chang’s Part I featured Vince Sherry’s clients. Part II focuses on Mike Smith and the success of his clients…

John Robinson of Savannah, GA competed in the full marathon at PF Chang’s Rock n Roll Marathon and set a 38 minute PR, running 3:33:09. Robinson’s half marathon split of 1:38 en route was also a half marathon PR! Robinson has been working with Run SMART coach Mike Smith for nine months and set PRs in the 10k, half marathon, and marathon in that time.

Schmidt finished almost a full four minutes head of the next finisher. His official time was 1:17:36 (5:55 pace) – full results. Everett Hill Runs 24 Minute PR

Everett Hill put forth his another stellar performance since signing on with the Run SMART Project. This past weekend at the PF Chang’s Rock & Roll Marathon Everett rolled his way to a new PR of 4:11:12.

I do believe that it is fair to mention that this marathon was far from Everett’s toughest battle. Only a few years ago Everett was placed on life support after suffering from cardiac arrest. He only started running after having open heart surgery.
Check back for Everett’s story, as we will soon be posting it in his words right here on the news page.
Congratulations on the new PR Everett and may there be many more to come.
