Janet Finishes 11th At World Half Marathon Champs

We want to extend a big congrats to Run SMART coach Janet Bawcom on setting a new season best at the World Half Marathon Championships in Great Britain. Janet finished 11th overall in 1:10:46 [Official Results].

She was also first American in the race, which earned her “Athlete of the Week” honors from USATF.

Like Running With The Bulls

Michael Koscuiszka was ‘running with the bulls’ over the last three miles of the NYC Half. He was literally charging to the line as his fastest miles were 11, 12 and 13, finishing in 1:30:01. His game plan of hanging back early paid off in the end…

I had thought about going out with the 1:30 pace group but instead hung back (~7 min/mi) for the first few miles, to include the Great Hill of Central Park. I settled into race pace (~6:49) as I exited CP and headed down 7th Ave through Times Square. That was maybe the best part – my wife is in a Broadway show and I ran by her in front of her theater.

The wind blowing west across 42nd St was a nice boost over to the West Side Highway. I kept it up until the 10 mile mark. Then I hit 6:40, 6:35, 6:30. I got scared coming out of the hill of the Battery Park tunnel/underpass (watch lost satellite) and into the headwind off the East River but took a dead sprint over the last 1/4 mile. It was great 🙂

Chris Brennan Drops The Hammer At NYC Half

Chris Brennan of Brooklyn, NY dropped the hammer down the West Side Highway today at the NYC Half. Chris is a member of our local training group with the NY Flyers. Since joining our group a few years ago he’s PR’d at most distances and continues to improve each season.

This morning he continued his hot streak with another half marathon PR but the best part was how he finished the race. Chris’ official time was 1:27:45 (Full results) and his final two miles were his fastest by far (Mile 12 – 6:20, Mile 13 – 6:28).

Andy McGhee Rocks The Sandals In Route To 14-Minute PR

Andy McGhee of Southampton, England is about halfway through his 12-week custom training plan from Dr. Jack Daniels and he’s already seeing some big fitness changes.

I was not supposed run any events until the Southampton Half Marathon where I was aiming for a PB around the 1:31 mark, however I got roped into a half marathon this weekend and I smashed my previous PB (1:42:24) in a time of 1:28:14.

This same event last year was the first time I competed barefoot style. Last year I ran 1:55:30. This year I maintained a 6:44/mile average so I’m very happy with the progress.

Father Time Can’t Hang With Scott

Scott Mersiowsky and coach Ann Alyanak continue to defy Father Time. This past week at the Richmond Half Marathon Scott ran a lifetime best of 1:19:32 and finished 3rd in the 45-49 age group. [Full results] If you check out Scott’s Athlinks data you have to go back 13 years to 2002 to find his previous best for a half marathon (1:20:11). That’s incredible!

The man turns 50 in January yet he’s still improving after 14 years of competitive running on the local masters circuit. This isn’t a guy who always ran but just started training seriously a few years ago. Scott has been trying to compete at the best of ability for well over a decade now. And he’s not just doing this in longer races, which is conventional wisdom for an older runner. If you look at 2002 he also ran 17:09 for 5k. Just a few weeks ago he ran 17:29 and his 5k time has continued to get faster this year too.

James Cress Sets New PR In Detroit

James Cress, of Kalamazoo, MI, beat his half marathon PR from 2013 by 6-minutes at the Detroit Half Marathon. The 47-year-old ran his first sub-2 hour half clocking 1:58:22 [full results].

Oscar Gomez Sets Four PRs In Staten Island Half

Well, five, if you consider that he beat his 10k PR twice in route! Oscar Gomez has been training in our NYC Marathon Training Program with the NY Flyers. This will be his third marathon program with Run SMART and each season he just keeps getting faster.

This past weekend at the Staten Island Half Marathon he improved his PR by 4:15 finishing in 1:40:04 [Results] Along the way he also managed to set new PRs for 5 miles, 10k and 10 miles!

After the race, he sent us a note, “It is so rewarding to see this much progress only 7 months after the NYC half, where i set my previous PR. It is also incredibly encouraging to see all our work paying off (BIG) just weeks before marathon day. I hope today’s race is a sign of things to come for all of us. I am also grateful for the program, for our most excellent coach, and for my running mates that so often pull me through the hard work.”
