Joey Teter Runs 1:12:01 At Indianapolis Half Marathon

Last week we posted about all Joey’s progress with Run SMART coach Janet Bawcom. We wrote about his recent PRs for 5k, 10-miles and half marathon. This past weekend he continued his hot streak lowering his half marathon PR again.

At the Indianapolis Half Marathon this past weekend Joey ran 1:12:01, over a 3-minute PR. He was 36th overall out of 8,116 finishers. At 10k he was averaging 5:32 per mile so he ended up with a negative split averaging 5:30 pace for the entire race. [Full results]

“The Plan Worked Perfectly”

Drue Coles of Bloomsburg, PA set a new PR last month at the Wineglass Half Marathon in upstate NY. His official time was 1:29:45, just over one-minute faster than his previous best from 2014 and just under his ultimate goal of sub-1:30. [Full Results]

At age 53, it’s great to see Drue still getting faster. After the race he commented, “The plan worked perfectly….I’m glad I found The Run SMART Project (and before that, Daniels’ Running Formula). I thought perhaps I had peaked in 2014 since my 2015 racing times were generally a little slower, but I guess I just needed the right workouts in the right order!”

Papadakis Wins Balkan Masters Champs

At the 26th Balkan Veterans Athletics Championships in Nadi Sad, Serbia, Stamatis Papadakis took home the gold medal in the Men’s Half Marathon. Stamatis is currently following a 24-week marathon plan on VDOT O2 geared towards the Athens Marathon. The Greece native traveled to the Balkan Masters Champs to test his fitness and it appears training is going really well right now. He ran a 16:40 5k (VDOT 61.6) the first day of competition to warm-up 😉 and then came back the following day to win the half marathon in 1:14:13 (VDOT 63.7)!

Afterwards, Stamatis commented, “I am 42 and this is my best time ever! Thank you for your program!!!”

Not sure which is more impressive, the new PR even though this was just a workout for Hakim as he prepares for his goal race (Chicago Marathon) in a few weeks, or the brand new hardware he received at the finish?!?!

Jay Smith Recorded Third Fastest Half Marathon In U.S. M55 Age Group

Jay Smith of Concord, NH has been a regular customer of ours the past two years. We’d like to thank him for letting us share this testimonial on our blog. According to mastersrankings.com, Jay’s performance in Athens, OH ranked #3 in the U.S. in the half marathon for 2015.

I owe my improvement from 1:29 at the Macau Half Marathon in December 2014 to 1:24:18 at the Athens, OH Half Marathon in April 2015 to the training plan put together by The Run S.M.A.R.T. Project. Thank you for pushing me to a new age 50+ PR. I not only ran a great time, I was also 4th place OVERALL in the Athens race! [Full Results]

Like Running With The Bulls

Michael Koscuiszka was ‘running with the bulls’ over the last three miles of the NYC Half. He was literally charging to the line as his fastest miles were 11, 12 and 13, finishing in 1:30:01. His game plan of hanging back early paid off in the end…

I had thought about going out with the 1:30 pace group but instead hung back (~7 min/mi) for the first few miles, to include the Great Hill of Central Park. I settled into race pace (~6:49) as I exited CP and headed down 7th Ave through Times Square. That was maybe the best part – my wife is in a Broadway show and I ran by her in front of her theater.

The wind blowing west across 42nd St was a nice boost over to the West Side Highway. I kept it up until the 10 mile mark. Then I hit 6:40, 6:35, 6:30. I got scared coming out of the hill of the Battery Park tunnel/underpass (watch lost satellite) and into the headwind off the East River but took a dead sprint over the last 1/4 mile. It was great 🙂
