And he’s fast…

“With the Olympic Trials just a year and a half away it’s time to start making progress towards my main goal as an athlete, to return to the Olympics and be at my very best there. This is something that has eluded me the last two Olympics but I am hopeful and expectant for the next years ahead with Jack’s guidance.”

Once named “World’s Best Coach” by Runner’s World Magazine, Daniels is has also advised running greats such as Jim Ryun and Joan Benoit Samuelson.

SpeedPass, New York City’s only custom group training option, enters into its second season later this month. Most local speedwork groups are fun and motivating but they lack personalization. Unlike other running group options in New York, SpeedPass provides custom workouts and paces (runners of all levels) geared toward your current goal(s). 

SpeedPass – Season 2

16 Weeks ($125)

  • Tuesday nights at 7pm, starting July 29th
    • Designed for those training for a fall half and/or marathon
  • Thursday nights at 7pm, starting July 31st
    • Designed for those who aren’t running marathon until the winter or spring
    • Designed for those who want to get faster for shorter races like the 5k/10k

The Run SMART Project has partnered with local NYC club, the NY Flyers, to offer all fall marathon runners a custom training experience. Runners of all levels now have the unique opportunity of following a training schedule designed by legendary coach Dr. Jack Daniels and tailored to their training history/goals. Every member of the training program receives custom workouts/paces and trains in a group with runners of similar ability under the advisement of local Run SMART coaches.

Become A Faster Runner With Andrew Bumbalough

NEW YORK (June 11th, 2014) — Professional distance runner Andrew Bumbalough has teamed up with legendary coach Dr. Jack Daniels and The Run SMART Project to offer his 5k training plan to the world. Bumbalough, the 2013 U.S. Road 5k Champion, has unveiled all of his training secrets to help other runners get faster.

Competitive distance runners of all ages can now do the same workouts as Bumbalough but at the appropriate paces thanks to Daniels and his famous VDOT formulas. On your VDOT training calendar you also get to watch videos of Bumbalough training and providing tips while you follow your plan.

Today we’re announcing – SpeedPass – our new training partnership with The NY Flyers, one of New York City’s largest running clubs. Most running/speedwork groups are fun and motivating but they lack personalization and structure needed to help runners stay healthy and maximize their potential.

SpeedPass is broken into three seasons throughout the year to provide more structured training. Unlike other running group options it provides custom workouts and paces depending on what your focus is for that season.

All SpeedPass members receive:

  1. One in-person group/coached practice session per week
  2. Invite to Dr. Jack Daniels VDOT Training Calendar Log
  3. Two custom quality workouts/paces per week added to your training calendar

Michael Kidder Bounces Back With A BQ/PR Sandwich

Michael Kidder of Brentwood, TN customized one of our marathon plans for the Carmel Marathon on April 12th. We’ll let him take it from there:

After using the 18 week program you designed, I pulled up at the Carmel marathon on mile 18 (on BQ pace with the pace group at the time) with a huge blister and was forced to walk off the course for the first time in a race ever.

Undeterred, I signed up for the Flying Pig the next day and finished it this weekend – 3:09:05 for both a PR and my first BQ time!

Dr. Jack Daniels Is Coming To Cross Country Camp

We’re back in Steamboat Springs, CO this summer (July 27th – August 2nd) for the 2nd Annual Run SMART Camp! This year we’ve moved the dates back a week to make it more convenient for coaches and teams to attend. Oh, and we added maybe the greatest running coach of all time to the itinerary. Dr. Jack Daniels is coming!

Jack’s Keys To Running Faster In The 800m and 1500m

For improvement in 800m and 1500m/mile the main key is to work on comfortable Repetition workouts — fast, but not so fast you lose good mechanics. Often runners try to run too fast in their Rep sessions and they lose the benefit of the session, which is economy and speed, and it is hard to improve economy if you are struggling to hit too fast a time. [Determine your Rep pace]

It is easy to overlook good aerobic training in an 800m/1500m program, with the idea that all that is needed is speed. Good aerobic fitness (from Interval workouts) not only benefits these races themselves, but improves rate of recovery when doing the faster Rep sessions. [Determine your Interval pace]

Recently, we release Jack’s newly designed training template for runners looking to finish their first marathon. You can find this plan amongst Jack’s other training options here.

Who:  The concept was to develop custom training for runners who have already raced other distances but now want to take the leap and advance to the marathon with a goal of finishing in one piece! The plan will serve as a great foundation from which to build on in your second attempt to become a faster runner. It’s the first part of a longer term approach for our marathon newbies to ensure you’re training at the right paces – not overtraining.
