Kim Sidey Gets BQ After 27th Marathon

Kim Sidey of Augusta, Georgia completed his 27th marathon and got his first BQ at the Erie Marathon.

I followed a Run SMART plan for 6-months. My goal was to break 3:40 to ensure entrance in the Boston Marathon. My final time was 3:37:12. It was just a matter of sticking with the plan. It was my 27th marathon and second serious attempt at qualifying. It was also my first training plan. My own devices were not adequate and it took the Jack Daniels’ plan to really make it happen. Thanks!

Become A Certified Running Coach, By Dr. Jack Daniels

Running coaches of all levels can now improve their resumes by becoming certified online by the “World’s Best Running Coach.” Are you up to the test? Take the VDOT O2 Distance Certification Exam, authored by legendary coach Dr. Jack Daniels.

According to Runner’s World Magazine, Dr. Daniels “has had a bigger influence on training-for-running than anyone. He might be considered the Albert Einstein of the sport.” That influence is immeasurable because of the thousands of athletes Dr. Daniels’ research has affected through other coaches following his VDOT method.

How To Increase Your Weekly Mileage

Dr. Jack Daniels’ principles on increasing weekly mileage:

  • Increase weekly mileage by as many miles as the number of runs you do each week
    • Increase by 5 miles per week if running 5x per week
    • Never increase more than 10 miles
  • Stay with one amount of running for at least 4 weeks
    • Do not follow 10% weekly mileage increase rule
    • Let your body adjust to a certain amount of stress before increasing volume

Dr. Jack Daniels’ Sample Treadmill Hill Workout

Hills are a great way to improve your speed/running economy. They serve the same purpose as 200m or 400m Reps but with added resistance. One downside of doing hill repeats outside is all the impact/stress from running easy back down the hill. A great way to avoid this and mix up your training is to try it on a treadmill.

Below is a sample treadmill hill repeat workout that Dr. Daniels loves prescribing for his athletes. Pictured above, you can see Ryan Hall in the middle of a similar workout from Jack!

Get Your Temperature Adjustment

It’s hot out! As runners we dread the heat and humidity, especially when it hinders our performance. Fortunately, Dr. Jack Daniels’ formulas for temperature adjustment can now be utilized in our VDOT O2 Running Calculator app. No longer should runners be overtraining in the heat or be frustrated by not hitting their goal splits!

Here’s how it works and we’ve embedded the calculator below so you can try it out. [If you’d like to embed the calculator on your site grab the code here]

20x30-OTXX2897Ray Venables set a new PR and got his BQ at the Ottawa Marathon. His official time was 3:02:52. [Full results]

Afterwards, Ray kindly thanked us for the training…

I’m writing you to THANK YOU as best as I can in an email. I did it with you and the Run SMART project team’s help: I qualified for the Boston Marathon (unofficially)!

On Sunday, May 24 I finished the Ottawa Marathon in 3:02:52! That’s a both a PR and a BQ! I’m stunned at the results that I attribute to a sound training program. After following the Jack Daniels’ program for the first time, I feel like I now know how to train for a marathon properly!
