“You Must Have Guiding Principles Of Training…”

Runners in the UK were treated last month to a little in-person coaching from Dr. Jack Daniels at his latest VDOT Coaching Clinic. One of our favorite takeaways from the weekend was this quote from Jack:

“You must have guiding principles of training, not copy what works for the best athletes.”

This is the essence of Daniels’ Running Formula. So many coaches in history are recognized for the incredible success of one or a few athletes. What about everyone else they coached? When utilizing the principles outlined in Jack’s book you see broad success, not just with a few individuals.

The Mental Edge To Achieve Sub 3-Hours

We received a testimonial from a great local runner in France. We were excited to learn how the VDOT Calculator helped him achieve a time in the marathon he never imagined he could run. Simon has granted us permission to share his kind note. We’re excited to see this young runner continue to progress as gains more and more experience.

My name is Simon and I’m a 26-year old french runner who lives near Paris. I began to run 3-years ago. My first race was a 10km in 48-minutes and I told my girlfriend that I never will run a marathon.

“The Plan Worked Perfectly”

Drue Coles of Bloomsburg, PA set a new PR last month at the Wineglass Half Marathon in upstate NY. His official time was 1:29:45, just over one-minute faster than his previous best from 2014 and just under his ultimate goal of sub-1:30. [Full Results]

At age 53, it’s great to see Drue still getting faster. After the race he commented, “The plan worked perfectly….I’m glad I found The Run SMART Project (and before that, Daniels’ Running Formula). I thought perhaps I had peaked in 2014 since my 2015 racing times were generally a little slower, but I guess I just needed the right workouts in the right order!”

“Jack’s Running Formula Taught Me Difference Between Training And Exercise”

Congrats to Antony Scott for training and completing his first marathon in Chicago in 3:09:24 after purchasing the 3rd Edition of Daniels’ Running Formula. The 51-year-old from Anchorage, AK credited Jack and VDOT for his impressive result…

“Jack’s Running Formula taught me the difference between training and exercise. Wow.”
“I just finished my first marathon this Sunday in Chicago in 3:09.24. Not bad for a 51 year-old, but things just pretty much went according to the plan. What I’m trying to say is that careful adherence to an actual PLAN produced the expected results. It was fun running past miles 18, 19, etc., not hurting (much), conscious of running distances greater than I’d ever done. Run smart, indeed!”
“Those run tables and predictions are something else. Thanks to all of the work put in by Jack, and all of his colleagues over the years. I love the empirical and structured approach.”

The Making of the Run SMART Training Plans

By Vince Sherry

A couple of years ago I was looking through a schedule that Jack had sent me to prepare for the Carlsbad 5k.  The schedule was similar in format to what you would find in his book, Daniels’ Running Formula, but very different in terms of content.  While I was looking at the schedule I wondered if most runners knew how many different schedules Jack had written over the years.  At the time almost every competitive runner in Flagstaff (along with countless visiting athletes) had received a schedule from Jack for one race or another and no two were the same.
