Brian Schmidt Wins Masters Title At DRC Half Marathon

At the 2010 DRC Half Marathon, Brian Schmidt took home the masters title finishing 9th overall in 1:15:19 (full results). Just last year in the same race, Brian was second masters finisher in a time of 1:17:10. Usually, when you hit the masters division it’s all about who can slow down the slowest but in Brian’s case, at 41 years old, he’s still improving. Just this past spring we reported his new 10k PR, a 10 second improvement from his previous best set at age 39.

Ben Schippers Wins Running With Heart 5k

Run SMART client Ben Schippers won the 2010 Running With Heart 5k at Iowa St. University. The 29 year old Brooklyn resident dominated the field winning in a very impressive time of 16:12 – almost three minutes ahead of second place. Ben signed up for private coaching this past March and since then he’s become a completely new runner making incredible improvements over various distances. Check out his new personal bests after joining The Run SMART Project just six months ago:

Leo O’Connor Makes Huge Improvement At 59

At the 11th Annual St. James 5k Run in Johnson City, NY, Run SMART client Leo O’Connor finished 2nd in the 55-59 age group with an impressive time of 20:56 (6:44 per mile, full results). Last year at the same race Leo ran 22:55 so he improved by almost two minutes! Just this past July we reported his 21:56 at the Empire State Games, so he’s dropped his 5k time by a minute just over the course of a few months!! When asked by his coach, Blake Boldon, the last time he ran this fast, Leo responded, “I can’t remember when I ran this fast. It had to be eight years ago in 2001, probably in the same St. James 5-K race when I ran a similar (low 20’s) time.”

Brian Schmidt Takes Home Masters Title

At the 22nd Annual Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, AK, Run SMART client Brian Schmidt won the open 10k masters division in a time of 35:23 (5:42 per mile, full results). His coach, Blake Boldon, who got his first chance to coach in person with Brian since he signed up in May, 2009, added that it was a jet-lagged 35:23 considering Brian was only in the country for about 12 hours before the race after a long trip in Singapore.

Looking back on Brian’s results since joining The Run SMART Project, I believe this is his third victory!

Stuart White Wins Palo Duro Ultramarathon

In his first ever ultramarathon Stuart White won the Palo Duro 50 mile Trail Run this past weekend in Palo Duro Canyon State Park! His official time was 8:26:25 (full results). Stuart’s Run SMART Coach, Blake Boldon, was fired up after the race, “He battled record high temperatures in the West Texas sun and struggled with cramps for more than ten miles.  He successfully persevered to win by 20 minutes!!”

I’ve checked the records and it’s official – Stuart is the first Run SMART client to take home an individual title in an ultramarathon. Nice work!

Three Fundamental Principles Of Running

Three Fundamental Principles Of Running

By Blake Boldon

This summer I was asked to speak at a couple high school camps and without a specific knowledge of everything covered at the camp, my challenge was developing a relevant subject.  I thought about what lessons are universally applicable to all track and field athletes and distance runners no matter their competitive level or age.  After reflecting on my years as a coach and as an athlete I found three fundamental principles.

Leo O’Connor Wins Age Group

Leo O’Connor of Binghamton, NY won the 55-59 age group at the Masters Empire State Games 5k on July 24, 2010. His official time was 21:56 in very windy, hot and humid conditions. Leo finished 25 seconds ahead of the 2nd place finisher in his age group.

“My last 5k in October 2009 was 22:45. So today was a 49 second improvement. I think today will be a good start for my re-learning to race process,” said Leo.

Leo works with Run SMART coach Blake Boldon.

Cody Hill Runs Fastest Times In 15 Years

At the Boulder Road Runners All Comers Meet last weekend, Run SMART client Cody Hill ran the fastest 1500 and 3000 meter times he’s run in 15 years (when he was 21 years old)!  Cody placed 2nd in the 1500 meters in 4:24.8 and 3rd in the 3000 meters in 9:40.0.  On June 3rd, he ran 4:32.4 and 10:07.4 respectively for the same distances so he’s made huge strides in just the last few weeks.

Cody has been working with Run SMART coach Blake Boldon for about one year now.  Blake said, “Cody is really coming into racing shape and making big progress.”
