Leo O’Connor Makes Big Improvement In 15K

Run SMART client Leo O’Connor finished the 38th Annual Forks 15K in 1:09:26 (7:27 per mile), a 4:07 improvement from last year. Leo felt good about the result and his pacing, “I averaged 7:25 through three miles, 7:27 through six and then held it for the balance of the race.”

Since Leo signed up for private coaching back in June of 2010 he has made big improvements in his 5k and 15k times. And at 59 years old Leo and his coach Blake Boldon are still confident he can continue to improve after all his hard work this past year.

Brian Schmidt Sets Lifetime Best At 41

Run SMART client Brian Schmidt set a new lifetime best for 5k at age 41 after running 16:29 at the CMU Open in Fayetville, MO last weekend (results). His coach Blake Boldon summed it up best by email, “Lifetime best 5k age 41!!” Brian ran in high school and has been running competitively for a long time so this was a hard earned achievement. For someone with his running background, getting better as he’s entering the masters phase of his career is incredible.

Step 1: Self Belief

By Blake Boldon

Not too long ago I was scouring the internet looking for some old race results and I stumbled upon a 5k road race from the summer of 1996.  That summer the Olympics were hosted in Atlanta and there were some incredible races run on American soil in the months of June, July and August.  Mine was not one of them.

I was entering my junior year of high school in my small hometown of Osceola, Iowa and training like never before.  Having qualified for the state cross country meet the previous fall, I was logging summer miles with dreams of improving on my 56th place finish in the Class 2A state championship.  Here is the result I found:

Leo O’Connor Battles Winter Freeze

Run SMART client Leo O’Connor participated in the 2011 January Freeze 10k Series in Otsiningo Park, Binghamton, NY. The series consisted of four races or “Freezes” in which Leo ran as threshold runs to help him prepare for big goals this Spring.

Take Back Your Run

By Blake Boldon

As Christmas and New Year’s quickly approach, we runners find ourselves in the middle of the most challenging time of year to train.  The stress associated with normal work obligations, family commitments and social events is amplified by seasonal deadlines, holiday celebrations and travel.  Adding insult to injury, days are nauseatingly short and the characteristically brutal weather conditions can send even the insanely brave among us scampering for the nearest treadmill.

Stuart White Executes Great Race Plan

Run SMART client Stuart White was 2nd masters finisher at the 2010 Metro PCS Dallas White Rock Half Marathon. The 47 year old from Argyle, TX was 13th overall out of nearly 10,000 finishers, finishing in 1:17:35 (full results).
