We’re back in Steamboat Springs, CO this summer (July 27th – August 2nd) for the 2nd Annual Run SMART Camp! This year we’ve moved the dates back a week to make it more convenient for coaches and teams to attend. Oh, and we added maybe the greatest running coach of all time to the itinerary. Dr. Jack Daniels is coming!
We’re excited to announce a new coaching partnership with 5 Peaks Trail Running Series in Canada. 5 Peaks was founded as a 5 race series in Vancouver and has since spread out across Canada and up to 12,000 participants per year. The series runs from May to September each year with each region hosting one race per month and is highly regarded for it’s well organized events. More info…
As part of this new coaching partnership trail running standouts Alicia Shay and Rob Krar will be offering their expertise to all participants in a monthly private coaching arrangement. You can learn more about this unique offering here on our website.
Thomas Frame of Dallas, TX just started working with Run SMART coach Alicia Shay. After a few quick pointers over the phone regarding pacing he set a new PR in the 5k. Roughly a week later he followed her advice again and dropped another 40 seconds finishing the Form Follows Fitness 5k in 17:50!
Thomas was 2nd Masters runner and 7th place overall [Full results]. We’re excited to see how fast he can get with a little more time working with his new coach!
Marylee Martucci and her coach Alicia Shay have gotten off to a great start! In just shy of three months Marylee has set three PRs. She snagged a PR at a half in December, the Dubai Marathon three weeks ago and then another Half PR at the RAK last weekend in UAE. Not ideal to race another half marathon just three weeks after her marathon, of course, but there’s only a small window of opportunity for racing around Dubai. If you’re feeling good you’ve got to maximize your opportunities.
Alicia: The thing that I like the most about working with her is that she absolutely love, loves, loves running and is willing to do things that most athletes (even professional runners) won’t take the time to do. She is definitely one dedicated chica.
Run SMART client Cathrine Wolden was the 6th female and 1st masters finisher this past weekend at the St. George Marathon. [Full Results] Her time of 2:48:39 was a 2-minute PR.
We’re extremely proud and excited to see Cathrine reach one of her longtime goals of breaking 2:50 in the marathon. When she signed up for coaching and started working with Run SMART coach Alicia Shay back in 2010 her PR was 3:13. When you’re that fast and you go out and drop 25 minutes off your time in 3 years – you’re a badass! Your coach is a badass too!
Got a marathon nutrition question? Ask Alicia in the comments below. [Update: We apologize for the first minute of confusion. Bunch of amateurs! Q&A starts around 1 minute in.]
We started a new board on our fabulous but young Pinterest page called “Stuff We Dig.” So far we’ve got Daniels’ Running Formula (obviously), The GRID foam roller, and a new sports nutrition bar from our good friends at Picky Bars.
Today we bring you another great product – Peanut Butter GU, a favorite of Run SMART coach Alicia Shay’s. “It sounds kind of strange but it is a little saltier than most gels and tastes good enough that I actually look forward to taking a gel,” says Alicia.
Look for Peanut Butter GU Energy Gel or request this flavor at your local specialty running store.
Earlier this month we wrote about Run SMART client Cathrine Wolden refusing to stop getting faster after all these years. This past weekend she finished 2nd in her age group (40-44) at the NYC Half this past weekend in a new personal best. Cathrine ran 1:23:46, one minutes and 18 seconds faster than her previous best and almost three minutes faster than her performance in the same race last year! [Full results]
Cathrine works with Run SMART coach Alicia Shay.
Run SMART client Sarah Hay set a new PR at the East Bay Invitational in San Ramon, CA. The junior competing for Dougherty Valley HS finished 6th overall in 5:36.28. [Full results] When Sarah signed up for coaching with Run SMART coach Alicia Shay a littler over a year ago her best time was 5:44. It’s very early in the outdoor track season so we’re excited to see how fast she can go this year!
