Cory Benson ran her fastest Boston Marathon ever finishing 7th in her age group. Her official time was 3:39:53. [Full Results] Afterwards, she discussed her keys to success:
I happened to have the right combination of clothing on, so I didn’t develop hypothermia. Laughably, my secret to success was a cheap rain poncho and a hotel shower cap over my hat!
- I stuck with my race plan and didn’t waste a lot of energy weaving around people for the first few miles
- I like to break down the course into sections in my head, which helped prevent that feeling of “It’s such a long race”. My personal “landmarks” are the steeples in Natick, the Wellesley scream tunnel, the firehouse at the turn up into the Newton Hills, and the Citgo sign.
- I took a tumble at mile 23, which threw me off my pace a bit for the remaining miles, but I kept on going!
It was my fastest Boston time and I was 7th in my age group for the second year in a row! It’s so rewarding that at my age (61), I am still getting faster – all thanks to Alicia!
