Official VDOT Calculator Now Available On iPhones

The iPhone version of the Official VDOT Running Calculator is now available for download (FREE) in the app store. This follows our first mobile release on Android earlier this year.

We worked hard to keep the design simple and crisp but at the same time we wanted the functionality to serve many needs for runners and coaches. For instance, our calculator’s main use case is to calculate your VDOT to help determine training paces and equivalent performances. But you can also use it simply to calculate race paces, determine how much distance you covered by entering pace and time or determine how long a run is by entering time and pace.

Let’s dig in to our main use case – calculating your VDOT!

Download the app for free then choose whether you want to see results in miles or kilometers. Selecting gender does not affect training paces, only the color level you’ve reached if you’re entering in a race or estimated race performance.

For instance, to achieve a level 3 performance (lime green) on Jack Daniels’ VDOT Scale if you’re a male you need a VDOT of 45. If you’re female a level 3 performance starts at 40.2.

Determine Your Training Paces And Equivalent Performances

After saving your settings to accurately determine your training paces and equivalent performances you must enter a recent race or estimated result. Select distance (if not a default option, select custom then enter distance manually), then enter time. Now the calculate button is active – click calculate!

Swipe left or select the Training And Equivalent tabs.

Advanced Features – Adjust For Heat Or Altitude

Navigate back to the Calculator tab. Click “Advanced” if you expect to train or race on a hot day, let’s say 80 degrees Farenheit. This will allow you to calculate what effect 80 degrees has on your training and race paces if you’re in about 1:37:00 half marathon shape (as shown in screenshots above). Save advanced adjustment then click calculate again to see the updated half marathon result. Now navigate back to Training and Equivalent to see the effects.
