Question: What is the best field/non-lab method for obtaining VO2 max for an untrained or overweight person?
Dr. Daniels: W = weight in pounds A = age in years T = time for 1-mile walk (in minutes)
______________________________________________________________________________________________
H = 1-minute HR taken for 10-15 seconds immediately at end of walk (or during the final minute of the walk, if monitored)
VO2max (men) = 132.853 – 0.0769W – 0.3877A – 3.2649T – 0.1565H + 6.315
Example for a 160lb man, age 56 who walks 1 mile in 14:24 (14.40minutes) with 122HR
132.853 – 0.0769*160 – 0.3877*56 – 3.2649*14.40 – 0.1565*122 + 6.315 =
132.85 – 12.30 – 21.71 – 47.01 – 19.09 + 6.315 = 39.1 ml per min per kg

VO2max (women) = 132.853 – 0.0769W – 0.3877A – 3.2649T – 0.1565H
Example for 126lb woman, age 60 who walks 1 mile in 15:06 (15.1min) with 112HR
132.853 – 0.0769*126 – 0.3877*60 – 3.2649*15.1 – 0.1565*112 =
132.853 – 9.689 – 23.262 – 49.300 – 17.528 = 33.1 ml per minute per kg
