Science on the Run: The Maximal Footwear Debate

UntitledLinking current research to running

By Nikki Reiter

I couldn’t figure out how to respond in only 140 characters to a Run SMART reader’s tweet, ‘Say no to Hokas?’ in response to my last post about the ‘foot core system’. While I’m not an expert on Hoka shoes, I do have some reservations about it’s thick midsole. Thanks to @SaltyRuns for the tweet!

Alicia Shay Wins Flagstaff Sky Race

Congrats to Alicia on the very vertical hometown ultra win at the Flagstaff Sky Race. She finished the 39k of mostly single track with a 4,000 foot brutal final climb in 5:27:36. Results posted here.

Mike Smith Finishes 2nd At Chuckanut 50k

Run SMART coach Mike Smith finished runner-up at the Chuckanut 50k in a very competitive field. Smith, a relative new comer to the sport, hung on to the lead in his first ultra marathon until mile 22 when he got passed by eventual winner, Geoff Roes. Roes (3:41:52) and Smith (3:45:22) both beat the course record of 3:49:39 set by Andy Martin. Full results here.

Stuart White Wins Palo Duro Ultramarathon

In his first ever ultramarathon Stuart White won the Palo Duro 50 mile Trail Run this past weekend in Palo Duro Canyon State Park! His official time was 8:26:25 (full results). Stuart’s Run SMART Coach, Blake Boldon, was fired up after the race, “He battled record high temperatures in the West Texas sun and struggled with cramps for more than ten miles.  He successfully persevered to win by 20 minutes!!”

I’ve checked the records and it’s official – Stuart is the first Run SMART client to take home an individual title in an ultramarathon. Nice work!
